My First Ever Homecoming Day/Game… What I Did ^_^

I went to school in New York City so it’s not uncommon to have never attended a homecoming game. My school didn’t even have a football team because it wasn’t something we cared for, plus the name of my school was the High School of Fashion Industries which explains everything. There were art majors, fashion majors and merchandizing majors. Baseball and soccer were the sports that most of the student population cared for and also because we have the Mets and the Yankees the too best baseball teams ^_^ . Having this background didn’t make me interested in attending the homecoming game but once again it was an event that most of the BYU population was crazy about. I had to figure out what to do, so I decided to have a movie night with a friend then go party.

I spent part of the homecoming day watching Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and eating pizza from Papa Johns with one of my friend and it was pretty sweet. The crazy part of my day came when another one of my friend invited me to a costume party in Salt Lake City hosted by Westminster College. We were mad excited, we wanted to see what a really college party was like since BYU is not known for their parties. Heading up to Salt Lake was a fun drive, we got lost a few times, but I loved it because there were tall buildings everywhere and I felt a little closer to NYC. We eventually made it to Gateway and had dinner at a really cool Thai restaurant. The people we had dinner with were a lot different from the people we encounter on a day to day basis in Provo, I loved it. They seemed like crazy New Yorkers and that was somewhat refreshing. After the dinner we all went to the party.

The party started out really good but we quickly realized that a “real college party” didn’t involve obeying the honor code. The costumes were insane and not in a good way. I felt like I was back in NYC, because at my high school when Halloween came around modesty was not recognized. At this party both boys and girls were showing A LOT of skin, and it was really gross. The people that I was with tried to ignore it all and just have fun and through doing so we actually met some cool people who were also having good clean fun. At the end of the night as we exited the party they were giving out condoms at the door and asking people if they needed to call a cab, What? This was so weird. When we made it outside two people were wasted and there was an ambulance. We went back to my friends friend’s apartment and crashed there for the night. We got up early in the morning and headed back to Provo for our church meeting. On the drive back we concluded that we wouldn’t go to another “real college party” for a while. Attending this party made us both appreciate BYU and the fact that we actually have a honor code. We also found out that BYU had lost the homecoming game horribly. I was happy that I did not attend the game and surprisingly I was happy to have attended the party. Going to that party reminded me why I wanted to attend BYU, why I wanted to leave the city life for a while and how much I love modesty.

That was my first homecoming game experience.. not going to the game and doing my own thing ^_^

An Overview Of My Research Paper Topic

My Research paper will explore the issue of undocumented children in the United States. It is an issue that I am connected to and an issue I feel passionately about. I feel that the immigration system in the United States is broken and it needs to be fixed. The question I have for this paper is “Should undocumented children who have been brought to the United States be held responsible for their status? And should they have the opportunity to further their education as well as have an easier process through which they can become American citizens?” Many of these children were brought to America at a young age and consider themselves Americans. It is the only country they know and yet they are being denied the right to further their education and progress in society. I feel as though this is an issue that Needs to addressed because so many of these children cannot progress and have hit the wall with nowhere to turn.

I’m hoping that my paper can adequately address this issue and the concern I have for the well being of these undocumented children. Through doing some research I have discovered an amazing and powerful statement that is repeated a few times, “education is a human right.” If this statement is true then why are so many being denied the right to have an education?

I am in the early stages of writing this paper and it is very difficult to keep my emotions under control whether it is crying or being filled with anger and the need to act. I am outraged at the situation and sadden by the circumstances. It seems so morally wrong to deny children who journeyed to America with no real say in the matter a chance to progress. I have written letters to Vice President Joe Biden concerning the issue and although I obtained a response saying that the Obama administration is trying to address the issue, I feel that more needs to be done. People need to continually speak out and become aware because it is simply unfair and unjust. I hope that my paper will be persuasive enough to those that read it, helping them to understand the importance of the issue and the importance to act. In my English class a student once said, those that are brought to the shores of America, and are in America were brought here for a reason and are meant to be here. I truly believe that statement.

These are links to video clips on what is known as the Dream Act an act that many are hoping will be passed and it would greatly help those children who are currently seen as undocumented and cannot progress:
